Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum Prins Hendrik was formed around the collection of the Royal Duch Yachtclub, which was founded on the wishes of Prince Hendrik, brother of King Willem III. The Yachtclub was based on the Willemskade in the building that now houses the Wereldmuseum (Ethnological museum). Both museums have their roots in the Yachtclub.

The museum's collection consists of ship models, prints, sea maps, construction designs, photo's and pictures and martime utensils. The collection holds more than half a milion objects. The museum has permanent and changing exhibitions and has a library.  The permanent exhibitions are:

  • Professor Plons (professor splash), for children
  • De Collectie a choice of models, instruments, maps and prints.
  • WereldHaven - HavenWereld (world port - port world), a, partly interactive, multimedia presentation of the present day port of Rotterdam.
  • Mens aan Boord (people on board) Dutch shipping in the golden age of the 17th century. Presentation emphasises the people involved with the shipping activities of the United East Indies Company and the West Indies Company.
  • I name you... - ship building in the Netherlands from the 17th century up to the present time.

The museum shop sells a wide range of books and photo's of and about ships and shipping.
