It is 7am and the sun is burning brightly on the horizon.
We are crisscrossing the Low Veld in an open Landrover, skillfully
driven by Elliott, our guide. "Lion"
whispers
Elliot and yes: we stop and see two lions lying in the high grass not three
yards away from us. Our hearts start beating faster out of excitement, but also
out of concern. Elliott senses that perfectly and reassures us: "if you
stay seated, nothing will happen. They will not even notice you". And
yes indeed, the lions stay where they are, apparently bored. Then Elliott makes
a roaring sound. The lions jump to their feet and start roaring in return. Our
hearts miss a beat or two and for a moment it crosses our minds that this is our
last hour. Elliott remains dead calm. The lions remain upright for a while
giving us a golden photo opportunity. This what you are hoping for on a safari.
This is really Kruger Park, South Africa. It turns out to be a first taste of
the Big Five and many more wild animals we are about to see...Read
