Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (1469-1536)
This humanist was born in Rotterdam from an
illegitimate liaison between a priest and a certain Margaretha. He was ordaned
as priest in Gouda in 1492 and became secretary to the travelling biship of
Kamerrijk. He studied in Paris and while
travelling in Britain he meets with Thomas Moore. He was particularly interested
in the New Testament and the early theologists. He developed a biblical humanist
theology, averse to church ceremony and rigid dogma. He traveled through Italy
and wrote books about early theologists. Back in England he wrote "Lof der
Zotheid" (In praise of madness?), a satire on wrongs and stupidities in
society and the church. From 1511 till 1514 he lectured in Cambridge. Notable
are his translations into Latin from Greek of the New Testament. From 1517 till
1521 his lived in Leuven. Susprected of heresies he fled to Basel. He tried
unite humanism and christianity and pleaded for tollerance with the Roman
Catholic Church.
